GRAY - (1868-1951) English Painter Figure and landscape painter in oil and watercolour . Friend and follower of Steer. Born 20 January 1868 in Chelsea, London, son of a heating engineer; after working in the family business studied under Jacomb Hood c. 1885, then at the Westminster School of Art under Fred Brown, and at the Academie Julian, Paris. Visited America in 1908, 1909 and 1910. Member of the N.E.A.C. 1923. Exhibited at the R.A. occasionally 1919–40 and at the Paris Salon (Silver Medal); one-man exhibition at the Goupil Gallery 1923. Moreen MOSS BA
Hons "The March Hare" oil painting on canvas circa 2005. Included in the sale is the original exhibition catalogue. Approximately 19 1/2" x 19 1/2". In 1977 she was elected as a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. Her work is mainly figurative and frequently has a celebratory or religious content. It ranges from naive style, portraiture, allegorical/narrative, to a more conceptual approach. Recently she has been working at the Falmouth College of Arts, experimenting with new media. Many of her works are in private collections in Europe, Israel and America. She is also the wife of Bernard Moss (the famous Mevagissey potter), she used to help him paint his charming nodding ceramic figures (amongst other things). |
