FRANKLIN, Sir
John - (1786-1847)
Arctic Explorer
Born in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, he
joined the navy at the age of 14 and was present at the battles of
Copenhagen (1801) and Trafalgar (1805). In 1845 he commanded the Erebus
and Terror in an attempt to discover the Northwest Passage. Leaving Baffin
Bay via Lancaster Sound, they wintered at Beechey Island, then worked
along the coast of the North American mainland, but were beleaguered by
thick ice in the Victoria Strait (1846). Franklin died the following year.
The 105 survivors under Captain Crozier attempted to walk to Back's River,
but died of starvation and scurvy. One of the numerous relief expeditions
sent out found a record of the expedition to April 1848 with definite
proof that Franklin had discovered the Northwest Passage.
Autograph letter signed to an
unnamed correspondent (possibly George Canning), 1 page 8vo (glue stains
to the reverse with slight show through), 21 Bedford Place, 20 June 1835.
Regretfully declining an invitation for the following Wednesday ('I am
particularly engaged').

TRAFALGAR
A Battle of Trafalgar Wound Certificate 1805.
Vellum Wound Certificate or Smart Ticket, addressed to the Governors of
the Chest at Chatham 'for the relief of hurt and wounded seamen',
recommending to their attention James Alder, seaman aged 25 on HMS
Defiance, who was wounded on 21 October 1805 by a "musket ball which
passed thro' his right thigh" when engaged in boarding the
"Enemy ship Eagle"; signed by Captain of HMS Defiance (P.C.
Durham), Lieutenant (Wm. Wellard), Master (J. Osman), Surgeon (W.
Burnett), Purser (note-'on duty'), Boatswain (note - 'killed in battle'),
Gunner (Alexr Jacks), Carpenter (Wm Caught).
Vellum single sheet, printed, with manuscript
insertions, 12 1/2" x 9". Complete but extensively creased and
soiled (mostly to margins). With some separate typed notes (including
extracts from The Trafalgar Roll, 1913). 2 November
1805.
This is the first Trafalgar 'smart ticket' we have
handled. Despite the surface soiling, it is an eloquent relic of the heavy
casualties (70 killed and wounded, including the Captain) suffered by HMS
Defiance in battle. These wound certificates were required to be taken by
the wounded seamen from their ships to Chatham or Greenwich, where a
physical examination could take place, and compensation assessed.
Consequently it is usual to find the vellum certificates somewhat travel
stained. They were printed in various forms, with spaces for manuscript
insertions and annotations. The decision on examination of the wounded
seaman is not entirely clear, due to the worn vellum, but the matter
appears to end with a payment of £8 in 1807 in full compensation. There
are 2 important signatories to the document : Captain Philip Charles
Durham (1763-1861), wounded at Trafalgar, carried Nelson's banner at his
funeral in 1806; and William Burnett (1779-1861) who rose to become
Director-General of the Medical Department of the Navy. The action between
the Defiance and the Aigle was a major one: "...about 3 pm ran
alongside the French 74, Aigle, to which she lashed herself. The enemy was
boarded, and appeared to be subdued, but no sooner had the boarding party
hoisted the British colours over her than the Aigle's people rallied and
drove them off. Captain Durham thereupon cut loose the lashings and
sheering off ten yards or so, opened so heavy a fire that in about 20
minutes the French ship, which had gallantly defended itself, asked for
quarter, and was taken possession of." [The Trafalgar Roll]
