BARRATT

"Correct and Particular Account of the Trial and Execution of George
Barratt who was convicted at the Dorset Lent Assizes of Stealing a Cow

1819".
11 1/2" x 7 1/2" - rather
brittle handmade paper with illustration to the head, printed by G. Clark,
printer Dorchester.
Barratt appears to have been caught,
as the cow has some very remarkable characters - "There was a kind of
horny excerscence (like a corn), growing between one of the hoofs, it also
had a peculiar white mark on the udder, and one of the teats was
diseased".
The keeper had followed tracks of the
beast nearly 5 miles! to find it just outside the home of George Barratt.
Poor George was executed on his
birthday, amidst a large concourse of spectators.
Complete broadside could benefit from
a professional framing to stretch out the wrinkles. There is a small
pinhole to the right of the illustration. RARE. |

|
DERNLEY,
Syd
(Hangman)
In our opinion, Syd's book "The Hangman's Tale" is the most in
depth book on the subject of capital punishment. Syd was pro death
sentence to the end and as recently as 1993 put himself forward as
headsman in the Tower of London.
Interesting 2 page autograph letter, approximately 7" x 5",
dated 23rd July 1993.
Syd talks of his recent BBC appearance, a 65 minute interview that was cut
down to a mere 9 minutes. "I was quite disappointed". He
mentions becoming an honorary member of the Wandsworth Prison Association.
"The gallows there were dismantled recently and taken to the museum
near Rugby. The curator has invited me down to make a tape for
posterity". "You'll have a happy hour or so looking through my
memorabilia, somebody brought me the glass and iron spyhole from the
condemned cell of the prison, and a hell of a lot of bits and
pieces". The end of the letter is particularly interesting, hopefully
relating to his latest batch of home brew, he ends with the classic
line,... "You'll have to try a drop!", signed "Best wishes
to you and the wife, Syd".

JACK THE
RIPPER - Dr Francis Tumblety (Jack the Ripper suspect)
Autobiography, "Kidnapping of
Dr. Tumblety", The Indian Herb Doctor, Cincinnati Ohio 1866,
published by the author. 1st Edition, complete and original, full 82
pages. The front cover is almost detached with tears, very fragile, but a
rare book in any condition!
Dr Tumblety was arrested in connection with the
Lincoln assassination, he was eventually exonerated, but another rumor
began that he had at one time employed one of the assassination
conspirators. This rumor was dispelled as well. Tumblety subsequently
wrote and published The Kidnapping of Dr. Tumblety, a short pamphlet he
authored in an attempt to clear his name and re-establish his good-faith
with the public. In reality, the book is little more than a series of
paranoid ramblings and fraudulent testimonials.
He fled from London after being released from custody
a few days after Mary Kelly's murder. |

KRAY Reg -
Organised Crime Boss
Outstanding handwritten
letter 7 x A4 sized sheets (14 written sides), from Reg Kray to Bradley (Allardyce).
Each sheet bears Reg's initials and name in Gothic text to the top. As
always with Reg's letters... quite difficult to decipher but here is how I
read it :
Bradley,
Early today we was going to have a drink in the field - since you went to
lunch, something or someone made you change your mind, then worse still
you insult my intelligence by patronising ????? with lies that you miss my
company which has hurt me deeply and it has also caused me to have bad
doubts of you, in fact it has enforced doubts I've had thoughts perception
that I've had past 2-3 days. A Scorpion takes a lot to get over being
emotionally hurt in a relationship. A Scorpion would be worse than any one
on astrology chart. You know I wanted to puff with you but you chose to
stay in and puff with Jim or someone else! You have given me the
impression that I bore you which is worse thing you can do to me. I wish I
had a relationship like Anton and Adam have - I made up my mind before I
got here I would have such a relationship and thought I had a start of
one. I don't think it's a lot to ask but I can see it's not to be. I also
wanted to discuss the bad start I had to the day and also it has opened
the hurt I felt that you discussed your ????? job with Jim and John but
you did not feel it important to discuss with me, yet I am supposed to be
your close friend! I don't believe for one minute your intention was to
surprise me! It has also brought back to me the fact that you chose to
spend a night with Mick Stewart when we first met in preference to staying
in my company for the night! I will honour all I've said to you but rest
assured I ask for nothing in return in future. I was alone for 15 years at
Parkhurst so got used to my own company. You have never felt comfortable
in the Gym with me or on the field and I now know that you had no
intention of being on the cleaners(?). I could say a lot more but what
point. Thanks. God Bless. Affection. Reg.
Also written to the side "You put all the doubt there not me!"
& "I also now believe you know you have not got a visit"
& "It's true a house is not a home!".
A remarkable letter showing Reg's feelings for another man, certainly a
fascinating insight into the mind of one of England's most notorious
gangster.
Bradley Allardyce, who met Kray in
Maidstone prison, claimed he had been his gay lover. Bradley
Allardyce is currently serving a life sentence for murder in Belmarsh
jail. |

SANSON,
Charles-Henri (1739-1806)
Public executioner of Paris.
Guillotined Louis XVI.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Sanson'), in French, to an
unnamed correspondent, 1 page 4to with integral blank, 5 June 1790. A
highly truculant letter complaining of his inability to meet a debt. With
full transcription and translation.
'The tone of your first letter made it
clear that the only response you wanted was the hard cash. Despite all
my efforts, I haven't been able to procure it, and I have been counting
on putting my hands on things, but they always escaped me. So I kept
thinking tomorrow...tomorrow. Well finally, Sir, not having received it
yet, I won't have the honor of sending you what I owe you sometime
between today and next Wednesday. For now, as if by a miracle, I got
lucky and procured that sum elsewhere. Times have been difficult for me,
which has been very hard for me, but luckily now I will have the means
to get out of my difficulties. My being so lucky to come out of this
today, you, Monsieur, are the first to learn of it."
Letters of Sanson appear to be of the
greatest rarity. The Bibliotheque Nationale appears to possess only
a facsimile. There was another letter, dated 19 June 1790, in the Morrison
Collection (Vol. VI page 76 (unillustrated), but its present whereabouts
are unknown. An incredibly
rare signature. |
