DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan -
(1859-1930)
Scottish Writer of detectives stories and historical romances, creator of
Sherlock Holmes
Autograph Letter Signed 'A. Conan Doyle', addressed
'Dear Sir', agreeing to meet, and discussing spiritualist experiences,
'the most important thing in life' and explaining what these spirits are
like: 'As I visualise it you have a crowd at the further end of your
telephone some serious, some half serious, some joking. They differ about
these matters exactly as we do & when you mix with it with no high
intent, you come into contact with the less responsible beings. That is
the alternative to the Unconscious pressure theory.' 2 pp. 7 x 5 inches,
in good condition. 15 Buckingham Palace Mansions, S.W.1, 1 November. Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), author of The Adventures of Sherlock
Holmes, was also a well known writer on Spiritualism, to which he became a
convert in later life. In this letter he responds to his correspondent's
account of an unexplained experience. 'Your experience is interesting. But
a coin may easily be moved by unconscious pressure & your wife
presumably knew all these details. Had the two ladies been securely
blindfolded it would have improved the case.' Conan Doyle published his
History of Spiritualism in 1926. |
